Advertissement A Tous Bons et Loyaux subiectz du Roy (Poitiers, 1567)
France was engulfed in a series of vicious civil wars between Catholics and Protestants from 1562 to 1598. Perhaps as much as one third of the population perished as a result of war, famine and disease.
Print was deployed by both sides as a weapon of war, and to sustain the morale and enthusiasm of their troops and supporters.
This is the title-page of a pamphlet produced in the city of Poitiers in west-central France in 1567 by the faction urging loyalty to the King.
The cheap and hasty nature of the printing in a small regional city during a period of warfare explains why no other copy of this edition survives.
