A Declaration for The Payment of Custom and Excize (Dublin, 1654).
During the 1650s, the Cromwellian army which conquered Ireland required a large amount of taxes to finance its upkeep. This book contains several unique survivals of official orders raising taxes during the 1650s in Ireland, including this Declaration.
Detailed records about the collection of taxes from this period do not survive, but it seems likely that Cromwell’s New Model Army was able to ensure a very high degree of tax compliance. Who in their right mind would refuse to pay?
