Formulaire de Prieres Dont on se servira Dans toutes les Eglises & Chapelles de ce Royaume d’Irelande (Dublin, 1710).
The Revocation by Louis XIV in 1685 of the religious toleration extended under the terms of the Edict of Nantes saw around 200,000 French Protestants go into exile abroad.
The first Keeper of this Library, Elias Bouhéreau (1643–1719) was one of these ‘refugees’, and it should be noted that this English word is derived from the experience of these unfortunate réfugiés.
This example of French-language printing in Dublin reminds us that as many as 5,000 réfugiés eventually came to Ireland. This pamphlet describes the form of prayers to be used in 1710 by French Protestant congregations during a day of prayer asking for the continuance of God’s blessings upon the military forces of Queen Anne and her allies in Europe who were fighting against the French King.
