7. John Harris, Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca: Or, a Compleat Collection of Voyages and Travels (London, 1705).
This book contains comprehensive accounts of voyages across the world from the sixteenth century onwards. Harris’s main aim was to show the supremacy of Britain over other European powers.
Harris dedicated the book to Queen Anne (1702-14). He believed that ‘Our own Religion, Government and Constitution is, in the Main, much preferable to any...abroad.’
Harris believed the greatest hero of early English exploration was Sir Francis Drake (d.1596), of whom there was a striking, copper-plate engraving towards the start of the volume.
At the time of his death in 1912, Stoker owned a 1744 edition of Harris’s Travels.
