11. Melchisedec Thévenot, Relations de divers voyages curieux, Vol. II (Paris, 1696)
Thévenot presented the philosophy and life of Confucius, as well as accounts of the geography, history and peoples of China. This volume is open at an engraving depicting (L-R, top) beggars who have deformed their heads from their youth and pass as holy men; a Tartar woman; a Tartar warrior; a Chinese nobleman or mandarin with a pleasure garden in the background; a woman in a costume with long sleeves; (L-R, bottom) a man in religious dress with beads similar to those of the Catholics; another religious seeking alms; the youngest of the kings of Canton, with a palace in the background; and a courtesan on a donkey, her face veiled.
