Catholic Church, Psalter (London, 1503)
A Psalter is a volume containing the Psalms from the Old Testament and other devotional material. This volume was produced by Wynkyn de Worde (d. 1534), who worked for the first printer in England, William Caxton, but subsequently became an important printer and publisher in his own right. This Psalter is one of only two known copies of this edition in the world. The first page contains a calendar for January with the saints’ days and the Epiphany printed in red ink. The drawing is of a scholar or monk with his books, ink, pen and knife. At some point an inscription was also cut out of the top section of the left page.
