Sophocles, Tragoediae vii (Leiden, 1593)
Sophocles (c.496–05 bc) was one of the great playwrights of ancient Athens. Seven of his tragedies have survived in complete form. The drawings of the skulls and skeletons at the start of this book are striking, and the volume also shows evidence of previous owners, one of whom may have sketched the drawings: ‘John Berry legally owned me. Arthur Bury legally owns me’. This page also displays a price of 1s 8d, a date of ‘June 20 1599’, and the inscription ‘Corp[us] Chri[sti] coll[ege]’.
