William Caxton, Chronicles of England (London, 1502)
The Chronicles are a history of England from the time of Adam and Eve to the Wars of the Roses. The text contains numerous references to the Pope, which an assiduous early reader completely obliterated after Henry VIII's break with Rome in the 1530s. Every single mention of the word ‘Pope’ in this book has been blotted out. In some cases the word has been replaced with ‘bishop’, signifying the Protestant belief that the Pope was merely the bishop of Rome and not the spiritual head of the universal church.
