This is a Primer published by the French bookseller François Regnault (1512–51), who specialised in supplying the English market. A Primer was a devotional book, which contained prayers, Psalms, excerpts from the Gospels, and a calendar of Church feasts, as well as other short texts. The feast days of Thomas Becket and Pope Silvester fell in December, and here an owner has attempted to obliterate their names after Henry VIII’s break with Rome.
