This page is from a book which has now been repaired in our conservation bindery. Heraldry is concerned with the design, granting and recording of family coats of arms and heraldic badges. This book of heraldry by John Bossewell (d. 1580) is a wonderful example of a text designed to be coloured by its owner. An early owner has indeed coloured the coats of arms throughout the volume, but he or she has also produced heraldic devices in the margin of this page in response to a passing mention in the text of the Stoket, Mordante, Clopton and Judge families.
